Bike EXIF | Throwback Thursday—Ice Pick: A 1973 ...

Point out of a themed {custom} bike conjures visions of unhealthy actuality TV choppers, and sends us into convulsions. However this scrambler is a theme bike with an enormous distinction: It is so tastefully executed, we did not notice there was a theme. Till builder Chris Tope revealed the story behind it.

Chris was requested by bike photographer Michael Lichter to construct a motorcycle for his ‘What is the Skinny’ exhibition on the Sturgis rally. Chris already had an acceptable and really skinny donor handy—a beat-up 1973 Penton Mudlark outdoors of Dallas, Texas. He’d been eyeing it for years, and now it was lastly time to drag the set off.

Chris had a really particular type in thoughts too, dubbing his challenge the ‘Ice Decide.’ “I had beforehand constructed a surfboard bike, a café racer, and a desert sled bike,” he explains, “so I made a decision to construct a motorcycle that was meant for the chilly. It’s the primary of my builds designed to be ridden on ice.”

“Each side and design of the Ice Decide was to make you are feeling her chilly look—from the iridescent paint, to the studded tires, to the tremendous sharp rear cowl made to appear like an ice choose.”

By no means heard of the Penton Mudlark? We do not blame you—it is an especially uncommon bike. Bike-curious has an incredible story about its improvement, however mainly it was a 190 pound trials bike with a 123 cc Sachs motor.

Solely Penton did not truly manufacture them—that was outsourced to a British agency, Wassell. The bike was in the end a gross sales flop, and discovering components for it right this moment is close to not possible. However by some means, Chris made it work.

“For majority of the components,” he explains, “I discovered a few good sources across the nation that had inventory. For the components I used from the bike itself, it took elbow grease and lengthy hours to get them salvageable. And the components I couldn’t handle to get ahold of, I fabricated myself.”

The motor went over to Jerry Birky over at KTM in Ohio for a full resto job, full with a ported head and a brand new ignition. It is hooked as much as a Bing carb with a modified Ok&N cone filter, and completed off with a very {custom} exhaust system from Gary Braun at Retrodyne.

The Mudlark is fairly ‘skinny’ out the crate, however Chris wished to slim its profile much more. So he ditched the twin shock setup, and fabricated his personal mono-shock system. It features a custom-made swing-arm, with a 1.75” extension and gussets for energy, and is related to the shock from a Buell Blast.

Chris then restored and put in a set of 32 mm Ceriani forks up entrance. He saved the inventory 21F/18R wheels, however polished them up, and re-laced them with chrome steel spokes from Buchanan’s. A set of studded VEE Rubber tires makes the Ice Decide’s intentions clear.

Chris did intensive work to the remainder of the body at the beginning went off to Atlantic Coast Plating for a full chrome therapy.

Up prime you may discover the Mudlark’s OEM gas tank, adopted by a hand-made aluminum tail part, tapered off to drive the ‘Ice Decide’ idea dwelling. The seat itself is roofed in white vinyl, achieved with a diamond-stitch by Dane Utech.

Kacey Elkins at Krossover Customs dealt with the bodywork paint, laying down an iridescent blue that resembles ice. On paper it sounds tacky, however in actuality it is a gorgeous impact that hits the mark. The gasoline cap obtained the identical therapy, together with an emblem that mixes two ice picks with a Union Jack, as a nod to Wassell.

There’s extra {custom} work occurring with the rider controls too. Chris designed a set of handlebars, then obtained Josh at Crybaby Cycles to manufacture them. They’re hooked as much as KustomTech controls, and a set of {custom} grips which might be made to look frozen.

They took some doing to create: Chris began with a pair of CNC grip sleeves from Mark Atkinson, then used a blue ice epoxy resin, ending the bar ends off with inlaid moonstone gems. Even the footpegs are {custom}, and in addition characteristic a pair of gems.

There’s yet one more {custom} contact within the steering stem: a ‘hobo coin,’ a signature on all of Chris’ builds. “On this construct it is a hand-engraved 1943 Liberty half greenback,” he says, “portraying a bike ice racer on a frozen mountain lake.”

Chris’ {custom} Mudlark nails each the ‘skinny’ and ‘ice’ themes with out feeling one bit gaudy or overdone. However maybe essentially the most spectacular half, is that he did all the things within the 10 x 12 foot toy hauler part of his 44 foot journey trailer. You see, Chris has a full-time job that sends him to a brand new a part of the US every year—his {custom} work, achieved as Utopeia Moto Firm, is simply an after-hours factor.

Not too shabby for a hobbyist understanding of a trailer, proper?
